HKJC - Happy Valley Feb 26

Race 1: 10-8-6-9

Wicker (10) faces an easier bunch tonight, and jockey Alexis Badel (10.2%) should be able to utilize the inside barrier draw to settle in just behind the leader. Wicker will hopefully follow in his older full brother Clement Legend’s footsteps, who after a slow start in his first season he went on to win 4 in a row in the middle of his 4 year old campaign.

Race 2: 1-5-11-12

Gunnar (1) picks up Victor Wong in the saddle, who has been sidelined due to injury since last May. Prior to the injury he was winning at 11.0%, and still claims a 5 pound allowance as an apprentice. Gunner shows some gate speed, and should be able to settle in near the lead. This 4 year old is likely to graduate to class 3 very soon.

Race 3: 2-10-12-7

Dor Dor (2) continues to pick up weight as his rating improves to the top end of class 4. He looks to be another one who won’t stay at this level for long, as he looks to be improving and hasn’t missed the top 3 in his last 4 starts. Jockey Alexis Badel (10.2%) has been heating up lately, finishing 2nd in the jockey challenge 4 times out of the last 10 cards.

Race 4: 3-9-6-12

Very Sweet Orange (3) has been very effective this season, with 2 wins and a second from 5 starts, utilizing flashy gate speed to control his races. He pairs up with Alfred Chan (6.2%) who claims a 10 pound allowance as an apprentice. The break will be important here, as Confucius Day (1) will likely look to contest for the early lead.

BEST BET Race 5: 2-9-5-10

Simply Brilliant (2) drops back into class 1 competition after not much success up at the stakes level, losing to the likes of Exultant and Waikuku in recent starts. Needless to say, he faces easier although still strong competition tonight. I thought his performance losing by only 3 lengths to Exultant in his most recent start was impressive enough to convince me he can win here.

Race 6: 7-3-4-11

More Than A Horse (7) was a AUS $380,000 yearling purchase who won twice in Australia prior to relocating to Hong Kong. He makes his 5th Hong Kong start here tonight, still in search of his first local win. This is his first attempt at Happy Valley, and stretches out to 2,200m which is a surprising move by trainer Douglas Whyte (11.6%). I have faith that Whyte knows what he is doing regarding distance with this one, and will use that uncertainty to get some value on a horse that should win soon.

Race 7: 5-9-1-7

Gunnison (5) may just have the gate speed required to keep Amazing Star (4) to his outside while clearing to the lead towards the first turn that comes very quickly over this 1,200m route. I am making a play here on a possible trip situation, so a strong break from the gate will be vital.

Race 8: 11-1-4-5

Kiram (11) was a winner last out for jockey Lyle Hewitson (1.3%) over the same track, route, weight and barrier draw. I expect long odds again tonight, and with this 9 year old seeming to be at top form with 2 wins and a second from 4 starts this season I’m willing to take a shot on him repeating the victory here.

Race 9: 5-7-11-9

Invincible Missile (5) retains the services of Zac Purton (19.2%) after a couple of 2nd place finishes together his last two starts. This 4 year old looks like he hasn’t seen the top of his rating potential yet- I expect to continue seeing improvement from him. He makes only his 2nd start at Happy Valley here, having an acceptable result finishing 7th beaten only 2 lengths last time at the track. Purton should be able to secure this one a covered up trip here.

Jockey Challenge Predicted Totals

  1. Alexis Badel - 46 points
  2. Vincent Ho - 22 points
  3. Karis Teetan- 20 points
