HKJC - Sha Tin Feb 19 (All Dirt)

As always, a free program and much more is available on the HKJC website.

Race 1: 9-11-1-12

Winner’s Brother (9) hasn’t had the greatest start to his young career, failing to hit the board in all 8 appearances, and never having finished closer than 5 lengths from the winner. So why take a chance on this outsider? He gets Alfred Chan in the saddle for the first time who claims a 10 pound allowance, and who seems to love this surface and route: from 16 starts on the all weather track going 1,200m this season he has 2 wins, 3 seconds, and 1 third. He is making his 4th start in class 5, where 6 other horses in the race are also winless. Last start he raced 3 wide the entire way without cover, and was only beaten 6.5 lengths in what I thought was a decent effort.

BEST BET Race 2: 4-2-10-3

Ka Ying Brilliance (4) drops into class 5 for the first time in his 17 start career. Tony Piccone (8.5%) takes over from Keith Yeung (2.6%), and he should be able to utilize the good barrier draw here to have this one right near the lead and down on the rail before hitting the first turn, which comes quickly over this 1,650m route.

Race 3: 6-11-1-3

Wonder Brahma (6) was a high priced prospect at the Hong Kong International sale last July (HKD $3.5 million), who has put up respectable performances in each of his first 3 starts. Still searching for his first win, this 4 year old will try the all weather track for the first time. Matthew Poon (5.8%) just needs to find a winning trip, and this guy should be ready to see the Sha Tin winner’s circle for the first time.

Race 4: 6-9-2-1

Party Genius (6). This 3 year old makes his debut start having won his most recent barrier trial, and looking sharp doing it. Alexis Badel (10.4%) and Douglas Whyte (12.0%) make for a strong jockey/trainer combination. He’s the less anticipated debut of the two horses making their first start here, but So We Joy (7) doesn’t look ready to me.

Race 5: 13-9-6-12

Curling Luxury (13) looks to be a rare opportunity for Lyle Hewitson who is winning at 1.3% this season with only 3 wins from 225 starts. This 7 year old is a veteran, making his 51st start in Hong Kong, and is a 6 time winner. Dropping back to a 44 rating today, this is a level he can win at.

Race 6: 2–1-3-10

Beauty Amigo (2) has had a long road to make it back to the races after a fractured right humerus in both 2018 and 2019. Debuting in class 2 might have been a bit much to ask for this 5 year old- today he drops into class 3 and tries the all weather track for the first time.

Race 7: 7–11-10-9

Enfolding (7) loves the all weather track here at Sha Tin, finishing top 3 in 50% of his 16 starts on the surface. Zac Purton (19.2%) has a win and three 2nd place finishes with the horse from 5 starts, so they seem to get along well. This 6 year old may be finding the top end of his range at a rating of 67, but I think he has one more win in him before the rating handicap will really hinder him. He will need a nicely crafter trip from barrier 12, but Zac Purton is as good as it gets in that regard.

Race 8: 1-3-5-12

Big Time Baby (1) is another one that loves this surface, having gained all 4 of his Hong Kong wins on the all weather track, including a perfect 2 wins from 2 starts this season. The 6 year old may work his way out of class 2 if he manages a win here as he is sitting at a rating of 103. Matthew Chadwick (6.5%) keeps the ride, and will have to carry 6 pounds more than when he won last time on the all weather track. That victory was strong, putting up a time of 1:07.89 and winning by a full 2 lengths, he was more than a half second below course standard time.

Jockey Challenge Predicted Totals

  1. 1st - Joao Moreira - 26 points
  2. 2nd - Vincent Ho - 26 points
  3. 3rd - Zac Purton- 24 points
