Sha Tin Selections February 8th

February 7th, 2020

HKJC - Sha Tin Feb 8

Race 1: 12-10–8-2

El Jefe (12) picks up Zac Purton (18.7%) in place of Neil Callan (4.2%) for this race, as well as enjoying a 2 point drop in rating which sets up for a rare occurrence where Purton is riding at one of the lightest weights in the race. This 4 year old looked strong, fighting on to win in his recent January 24th trial. This race is full of first time starters which could surprise- but that uncertainty could also create value here.

Race 2: 4-5-7-3

BEST BET: Little General (4) is yet to find his first Hong Kong win, but has been within four lengths of the winner for five consecutive starts. Tony Piccone (7.5%) who is in his debut season in Hong Kong and has seen limited opportunities may be an opportunity for value here. This one just needs the right trip and he can go with this bunch.

Race 3: 4-2-6-11

Bulletproof (4) is a first time starter who most recently ran a barrier trial on January 21st which to me appeared deceptively strong. He finished up nicely, and I like the way he did his best work coming through the line. This three year old faces older today, and will have his work cut out for him. Trainer Ricky Yiu picked him up for NZD$180,000 from the 2018 NZB Ready To Run Sale.

Race 4: 8-12-3-1

Speed Fay Fay (8) makes his second Hong Kong start after being three wide uncovered for most of the race in his debut. He stayed on okay in that race, losing by a margin of 5 and 1/4 lengths. With no rating relief, and Keith Yeung (2.8%) keeping the mount, I am simply relying on an improved trip here in a field that I see vulnerability in. Look for 100-1 or more on this one.

Race 5: 13-5-4-1

Blastoise (13) is moving up to Class 3 competition for the first time after five straight top three finishes in the class below. Joao Moreira (19.5%) sticks with this four year old for trainer David Ferraris (7.0%).

Race 6: 4-5-2-9

Mega Heart (4) has been the definition of consistency on the all weather track at Sha Tin, finishing 2nd in each of his last three outings. The seven year old picks up +2 on his rating this week, but also gains Joao Moreira (19.5%) in the saddle, taking over for Grant van Niekerk (12.4%). This one has had lots of excuses for not winning recently, including some wide trips and a dropped whip. Let’s hope he doesn’t find any more excuses this time around.

Race 7: 8-6-7-9

Green Luck (8) has been racing well in tough competition. He gets Alfred Chan (7.0%) (-10 pounds) in the saddle. He may be back down to a rating (91) where he is better suited, as he has been racing at a rating of 96 after a win back in November at a rating of 90. He wasn’t out of touch racing at 96, but was looking for a few needed lengths. I’m hoping the reduced weight from both rating, and Chan’s claim can help him find those lengths. He last raced carrying 130 pounds, here he will carry 109.

Race 8: 1-10-12-14

Star of Yuen Long (1) with jockey Vincent Ho (12.3%) look to graduate from class 3 competition here with what would be the 4 year old’s second trip to the winner’s circle in Hong Kong. Prior to coming to Hong Kong he had a couple of victories in New Zealand, back in 2018. He looks to still be outperforming his current rating at this level.

Race 9: 1-3-10-5

Voyage Warrior (1) has shown some serious talent in his seven Hong Kong starts- winning 4 times while progressing rapidly from an initial rating of 52 last season to the 103 rating he will run with here. Chad Schofield (7.9%) will be his 4th different jockey for trainer Ricky Yiu (17.1%). The inside barrier draw with a quickly approaching turn in this 1,200m contest will be key. Look for Voyage Warrior to be on or near the lead early.

Race 10: 3-14-4-1

Farhh Above (3) makes his 2nd start of the season after a very impressive win for trainer Douglas Whyte (13.2%). He had previously run two Griffin races here in Hong Kong last season, winning one, and finishing 2nd to Aethero in the other. Just check out where this horse came from in his latest win!

Jockey Challenge Predicted Totals

  1. Vincent Ho - 38 points
  2. Joao Moreira - 36 points
  3. Tony Piccone - 30 points
