Sha Tin Selections March 1st

HKJC - Sha Tin March 1st

Race 1: 13-10-9-6

Tang Treasure (13) is unlikely to get much love on the odds board here, as he has been ineffective over his first 4 starts. He picks up Karis Teetan (11.5%) for the ride, who has done well over this straight 1,000m route at Sha Tin this season- winning in 3 of his 18 attempts (16.7%). This 3 year old is coming back off a 77 day break since his last start and has not run in a Barrier Trial since January 18th. I’m hoping trainer David Ferraris (6.1%) has this one ready to surprise.

Race 2: 9-2-4-7

Regency Gem (9) still in search of his first Hong Kong win, pairs up with Zac Purton (19.5%) for the 5th time here. The last two times Zac was abroad, they managed a close 2nd and 3rd place finish. Regency Gem has performed better here at Sha Tin and has been better at the 1,600m distance.

Race 3: 1-9-4-8

Perfect Pair (1) quickly worked his way out of class 4 last season, but didn’t have much success in class 3. He drops back down today, and picks up Zac Purton (19.5%) for the ride. The Chris So / Zac Purton combo is winning at 15.2%, and they are they look to be in a good spot here.

Race 4: 3-9-6-1

Beluga (3) was a handy winner in his recent barrier trial, and teams up with Zac Purton (19.5%) again here in his debut race. This 3 year old was a NZD $400,000 purchase as a 2 year old, and looks ready to win at first asking here in class 4.

Race 5: 11-1-13-4

Party Everyday (11) was a HKD $7 million sale as a 3 year old. He is out of multiple grade 1 winning mare Scarlett Lady. He has had a slow start to his career, winless in 7 tries. He teams up with Zac Purton (19.5%) for the 2nd time here today, and Zac will ride at 118 pounds if he can make the weight. It is not every day you see Zac Purton riding the 11th rated horse in a race. The wide barrier draw shouldn’t be a huge issue over this 1 turn 1,600m route where there is a long run before the turn.

Race 6: 5-14-4-3

Ganesh Talai (5) should have more speed than he showed in his most recent barrier trial, as he produced a much faster win in South Africa in a maiden prior to relocating to Hong Kong. Jockey Jack Wong (2.0%) gets the call for trainer David Ferraris (6.1%). This 4 year old is coming back from an injury last August, , and after 3 months of swimming he resumed training in November . He looks to have enough work in to be fit and ready here.

Race 7: 1-4-6-11

Snap Fit (1) made quick work of class 4 last season, winning the first 2 races of his career. He then followed those wins up with another win to start this season, but this time doing so in class 3. He now sits at the top end of the ratings for the class, and looks to graduate to class 2 if he could find a win here today. He loses Zac Purton in exchange for Victor Wong (0.0%), who recently returned from injury. He is winning at a strong 10.4% over his Hong Kong career and still claims 5 pounds under the local jockey allowance.

Race 8: 2-4-14-11

Inner Flame (2) is unbeaten in 3 starts, and still looks to be getting stronger with every start. I don’t expect this one to settle in class 3, and the handicappers will without a doubt have him up in class 2 for his next start if he’s able to win here. Alexis Badel (10.2%) has been aboard for all 3 wins, and stays aboard today.

Race 9: 1-6-11-9

Farhh Above (1) came up just short of winning his 3rd in a row back on February 8th, and he was also my top selection that night He would benefit from a good pace here, as he likes to settle back in the field in the early going. This is another one looking to graduate to class 2 with a win today. Jockey Alexis Badel (10.2%) gets the call.

Race 10: 8-13-4-1

Super Star (8) was a HKD $4.7 million sale who has won 5 of his first 10 starts. He hits class 2 for the first time today, and faces much tougher competition in here. Karis Teetan (11.5%) will need to work out a covered up trip from an outside barrier draw. The trip is a concern, as he may not get the chance to settle in towards the rail around the bend. His last 3 consecutive starts have produced bleeding, which is confusing based on his strong performance. Given the high level of care and caution surrounding the health of horses racing in Hong Kong, I will trust that he is fit and able to race here today.
